SAL Intermediate Novets Cup – 29 November 2003
Back to winning ways in a hard fought cup tie in very wet and windy conditions on a very good pitch. We should have scored more than the one goal before half time whilst we had the marginal benefit of the slope. Again our finishing was poor. Gareth Banton scored a two yard volley to make it 1-0.
The second half brought a lot of pressure from HSBC as they sought to benefit from the slope. Nevertheless we scored from the break away from Tim Berry. Both Gareth Banton and Giles Warrell were unlucky not to add to our lead.
The whole team played extremely well. I was particularly pleased with Messrs Bird, Thoroughgood, Polley, Boughton and Gordon at the back. Plus the Berry Boys both Danny and Tim linked up well and HSBC couldn't really deal with them. AC showed a good attitude on the left.
Thanks also to Giles Warrell for allowing Les Samuels to start on the basis that Les wasn't very fit and it would be better to start and replace him - suffice to say Giles was on within twenty minutes (less his hat).
We are back there next week to play their sevens. The same attitude and commitment will I am sure with a bit more composure yield good rewards.
For the avoidance of doubt the 6th Team Christmas night out will be on Saturday 20th December - everyone to bring a shirt etc with them to football. We will put our gear in a safe place before entertaining beer and curry in a festive manner.
