SAL - 20 March 2004
A terrible game in terrible conditions against a very awkward Westminster side. As is standard practice, we started off slowly allowing Westminster to dictate the play resulting in some lightweight challenges and their centre forward being allowed space to score. This seems to be our weekly wake up call.
Unfortunately a disgraceful incident occurred whereby an off-the-ball altercation between Trevor and their right winger resulted in the Westminster centre forward choosing to run from the centre of the pitch take a jump and head butt Trevor in the back of the head whilst Trevor was facing the other direction. Since playing SAL football since 1997 I have never seen anything quite as bad as that before. Sunday morning on the park in deepest Wiltshire yes, but not SAL. After bringing Trevor around we played on. Their centre forward was rightly dismissed.
The fact that they were down to 8 players really did not help us as the game became bad tempered. We became frustrated and started to have a go at each other. Changes at half time and the fact that we now had the wind behind us brought a slight improvement as we pounded their goal. Two great headers from Tony Edwards on his way back from injury, a goal each from David Jenvey and Gareth Banton. Gareth for the second week in succession scored from the halfway line. Anyway we won.
Having broke my ankle last year I would like to send my best wishes to the lad on the other pitch who did the very same...
Dave Jenvey
