SAL Cup Final - 3 April 2004
Looking back on the game we really should have taken another one of the chances we had before half time. With the wind behind us we attacked Old Finchleians with a venom that has been missing in recent games. Everybody was rising to the challenge of playing in a Cup Final. Both Dave Robins and Trevor Boughton put in some very cute corners which Old Finchleians found difficult to defend. Both Jeremy and Matt went close before Matt Huffer finally broke the deadlock with a great header.
We continued to attack their goal and had further chances before half time. Old Finchleians did put some progressive football together but Danny Glenister in goal and Paul Lewis were outstanding at the back. 1-0 up at half time.
Now they had the wind! This time they attacked us with a fervour missing from the first half. Having said that, we nearly doubled our lead more or less straight after kick off but it didn't happen. Old Finchleians managed to grab a scruffy equaliser and quickly after that grabbed what ended up being the winner. We kept going and I genuinely thought Danny Berry had scored when he turned and shot from the edge of the box.
Eight minutes to go and only Jeremy Carter can explain why he didn't toe poke his effort in the goal rather than around it. It wasn't to be but we still have a chance of getting runners-up spot in our division. Everybody played very well. Both Luke Boughton and Peter Lester were very professional in accepting their part as substitutes and both came on and did well. A brief run down of the players involved:
Danny Glennister: Did very well in very difficult
goal keeping conditions. His kicking was good.
Paul Lewis: Outstanding at both right back and left back. The opposition found
him very difficult to go past.
Dick Polley: Very solid and assured throughout. Volunteered to be replaced by
young Luke.
Matt Huffer: Great goal but really could have scored a couple more. Very solid
in the first half but had a difficult time in the second half against the
wind.
Trevor Boughton: did well considering the shoulder injury. Replaced by
Peter Lester
Gareth Banton: touch deserted him at times but worked hard for the team
Jeremy Carter: Had a fine game really should have equalised.
David Jenvey: I had a hard job containing one of their best players but managed
to do so for the majority of the game but still lost. Should have made more of
my volley in the second half - another possible chance.
Danny Berry: I thought you had scored Danny. Worked hard in very windy
conditions
Tim Berry: First half went well as he continued to cause the back four problems
but didn't get as much of the ball in the second half.
Dave Robins: First half Dave caused them all sorts of problems and continued to
work hard in the second. Just didn't get the ball enough.
Peter Lester: did nothing wrong when he came on
Luke Boughton : stood up well when the opposition were trying to nutmeg
him
Well done chaps one game to go against Westminster Citz lets get 2nd place!
