SAL Division 4 South - 8th October 2005
Following last season's battles between the two teams (and the 6s' victory), this game was always going to be a hard fought match, and was eagerly anticipated by both sides.
The first half was very close with lots of commitment shown by all players. The 5s lined up with a fashionable 4 – 5 – 1 line up, that did cause us quite a few problems. Their lone striker was very lively and was making life very difficult for our defence, me especially. Our midfield was also having problems covering their 5 man midfield, and picking up their late runs. Despite no score in the first half, the 5s definitely had more of the ball and created more chances.
The second half started and remained a very tense time, with both sides desperate not to lose. Our midfield pairing of Ed Adkins and Andy Ferrznolo started to take control of the midfield early in the second half, making some great tackles and generally seeing a lot more of the ball. This was continued by James Holland replacing Andy in the middle.
Our improved play was rewarded by a goal 10-15 mins in. The 5s' defence cleared a Dave Robins corner, but only as far as the edge of the area where Ed Adkins fired a superb effort past the keeper. Ed nearly repeated this soon after, but shot just over.
The 5s then came back at us with some increased pressure, and following some desperate defending, managed to force a bit of a rash challenge out of Ed Adkins in the box and won their first penalty of the game.
The game then continued much as before, with probably not the best football in the world, but great commitment shown by both sides.
Just when it looked like the game was heading for a fair draw, Mark Raven used his upper body strength well, and my eagerness to win the ball resulted in both of us going over in the area. A penalty was awarded in approximately the 89th minute. At the time we were very unhappy about the decision, but on reflection it may have been correct. The penalty again gave our keeper no chance.
We did however manage to pick ourselves up after this huge disappointment, and following a deflected shot from Steve Greenslade, Justin Said managed to go through a score a great equaliser with the last kick of the game.
A great game that was fiercely contested by both sides, with all on pitch disputes and disagreements soon forgotten over quite a few beers in the club house after.
Finally, any witnesses to the sniper that shot Richard Bennett late in the second half, please come forward.
