SAL Division 4 - 22 April 2006

So the last game of a relatively successful season, 2 x Semi Cup finals and promotion within our reach with a couple of games to go, there was disappointment but plenty to celebrate along the way.

In the final fixture we travelled to Old Actonians who's excellent record is no coincidence and we knew even though they had won the league, they wanted revenge for the 3-2 in March.  They started well, whilst we strolled around the park at pedestrian pace and found ourselves in trouble quickly. Big Ed was caught in possession for one goal, James Holland would've hoped to have done better on another and I found myself in no man's land and napping as their centre forward got in behind and headed in their 4th.

4-0 down at half time was embarrassing. We might've been missing Nigel, Chewitt, Andy and Tony, but we had sufficient cover, we were just plain rubbish.  We came out for the second half so much brighter, Dave hit a glorious free-kick which bent onto the bar and fell back to Jamie's head for a nod-in. We scored a great 2nd too, Big Ed picked out a 50 yard pass to Tyrone, to sprint onto and tuck away with a lovely finish. Acton's got a couple more as James Holland, who had a great game in goal had a lot to do for 90 minutes.

We'd let in 6 on a nice sunny day, which prompted Jamie to let us know "We didn't come here for a tan boys", ironically that's exactly what we got. But we found a 3rd as Euro Boy tapped in from close range after a good counter attack. With seconds remaining, we threw the kitchen sink at them with all 11 players up for the corner. We eagerly awaited Dave's cross into the box, his foot managed to miss the corner flag but the ball hit the side netting!

An enjoyable season was topped off with a superb end of season bash. A few beers and a curry, so much nonsense talk from Nige who joined us after the game, and a 100 metre sprint which no-one believed Euro Boy could win.  No-one. Ben sneaked the players player of the season award, Big Ed got best goal vs 5's and Nige made sure everyone was prepared to "listen".  Top stuff lads, let's look forward to next season. Cheers.
