Weirside Rangers 5s

Carshalton 6s

1 Andy Bitmead snr

SAL Division 4 - 16 September 2006

Like most sides this was our first game of the season and with many new faces joining the frame it was going to be interesting to see what the outcome of the game would be.

Weirside's ref seemed to go missing on the day so up stepped the injured Chris Mingay, who in all fairness did an honest job giving what he could see and not what his peers told him to give.

The first half started brightly with many passes being strung together and many players trying to stake a claim. After most of the possession, chances started to appear.  Matthew Perkins and Andy Bitmead snr were creating gaps early on. However it was Weirside who would take the early lead as a goal which could so easily be given offside (because it was) although not to take anything away from Weirside - the finish was of top class. Carshalton did not lose their heads and kept pressuring Weirside until finally an equaliser was scored. A cross from Mark Edmonds, who in turn won the players' man of the match, was nicely headed home by Andy Bitmead snr.

Half time came and with our heads held high.  We knew we were on top of the game.  However it was to be a different Carshalton who entered on to the pitch in the second half.  A team which looked like they hadn't a clue who played where and how to string a few passes together.  From this came 2 vital goals in quick succession from Weirside, which well and truly damaged a spirited Carshalton side.

For the next 10 minutes Weirside's goal was under pressure with Tom Thoroughgood's shot being blocked off the line and chances from Dave Thoroughgood and Bradley Room going so agonisingly close.  Weirside were then to add insult to injury with their double close to the end that well and truly put the game to bed.

I would like to point out the our goalkeeper Adam Simpson (Simo) played well on the day, making two amazing saves and he really couldn't do much about any of the goals conceded.

MOM Mark Edmonds - well played!
