SAL Division 4 -14th April 2007
A good game against high flying BB Eagles who gave us the impression that they thought we were “there for the taking”. After a long journey and getting changed by the side of the pitch, rushed warm up, only eleven men, usual stuff whilst the opposition warmed up or should I say sunbathed. The referee even wanted a 2:45pm kick off which gave us 10 mins to prepare!. Negotiation skills to the fore and we agreed a 2:55 KO… the reason we were told was to stagger the use of the shower facilities!
BB Eagles started the brighter, putting our back four under pressure but Messrs Ley, Smith, Thoroughgood and Trumper stood very strong. Gradually we worked our way into the game with myself and Matt McLoughan gradually getting a grip to the midfield. Some good breakaway play between Mike Harwood, Harrison Benson and Tom Thoroughgood started to cause them problems as the half went on. We then witnessed miss of the season by Andy Bitmead - carpet fitter extraordinaire! from oh at least 2 yards out Andy managed to miss a tap in. Hot day working hard against 2nd in the table team and you watch that happen!!! We actually asked Andy to talk us through it at half time! I have never heard so much drivel in twenty years playing.
Second half we again came under pressure with some last ditch defending required at times. However we got through it. Harrison's back went and we had no legitimate substitute so he had no choice but to carry on. Limping around the pitch he managed to create 2 goals and score one for himself - all whilst holding his back in place! Tom Thoroughgood scored as did Mike Harwood with a header. Bingo! Job done. Well done to Craig in goal which also allowed Harrison to play on pitch.
BB Eagles didn’t expect that and to win 3-0 like that was very satisfying. The BB Eagles lads were a good bunch though and the game was played exactly how it should be - competitive but good natured with a bit of an edge. Well done to all.
