I don't know how we do this week and after week.
4 or 5 changes from the week before, yet still we manage to not only
get a good result, but also play as if we all know each others
games, when he hardly know each others names! Saying that, with
half the team called either Danny or Tom, that wasn't so difficult.
Although at one point in the second half I shouted out 'Hold your
position Danny' and three of the team stood still...
Kew came flying out of the blocks at us on
Saturday, and we didn't really get much of a kick for the first 5-10
minutes, Fatty in goal making a good smart stop from the oppositions
unmarked number 8. However, Nick and Dan Davis in the middle of the
park started to take a hold, and youngsters Katie 'Jordan' Price on
the left and Jean (Holy Moly, this boy's quick) Michel Jarre on the
right caused much aggravation to the Kew defence. Our opener came
mid way through the first half when a delightful floated pass from
Nick (I think) was smashed home from what looked like a tight angle
(well I was 80 yards away!) by Jordan. Individual opportunities to
increase out lead fell to virtually each player in midfield and
attack, but we finally went 2-0 up to a most unusual route; Tony
Edwards' right foot, from at least 20 yards out. He really should
spend every Friday evening doing what he did last Friday evening...
The half time talk was very much 'more of the
same lads', acknowledging the excellent communication between all of
us, and the drive and determination to win and win well.
The start of the second half was similar to the
first, Kew huffing and puffing for 5 minutes or so before we took
control of the game, although after about 75 minutes fitness levels
began to drop in one or two of our players and we took a foot of the
gas somewhat, which enabled Kew to scrap their way back into the
game. This led to them getting a goal back when Minty saved from
their centre forward but a midfielder easily scored from the
rebound.
What could have been a nervy last 10 minutes was
soon put at ease, when Boothy (who replaced the excellent Harry at
left back) rose like a rather tubby pinky gingery salmon and nodded
a good finish past Kew's 9 foot tall keeper.
With a minute to go, Tony Edwards scored his
second taking him to double figures for the season.
I'm not entirely sure that 4-1 did us justice.
John (coming on as sub after scratching his knee at school earlier
in the week), hit the woodwork and put a header narrowly over the
top, and Dan up front went close on a couple of occasions.
Here is an interesting stat. Since October 10th
2009, Cars 6th team has only lost in the league to BB Eagles.
That's 4 and a half months losing to only one other club in the
league. I think that is very impressive...
