Old Actonians 9s

SAL  – 19th October 2002

Well, I cannot remember much about this game, and to be honest I think that is a good thing. The performance on Saturday is best described as a Jekyell and Hyde performance.

First home game of the season, everyone turned up for the meeting time, on time, (which makes a change) and with the nets put up the right way (a rare sight) the game ahead looked promising. Especially as we had 6 points from our opening two games, everyone was in good spirits, especially as Cookie and Dylan provided the pre-match entertainment by letting Sprog (little Johnny Hicks) know that his dress sense is very much like Brian Dowling off of SMTV live (hello sailor).

The first half saw a confident and solid looking Carshalton as they raced into a 2 goal lead.  The first coming from the boy Banham, at a slight angle the Foundation coolly curled the ball round the keeper with his sweet right foot! The second coming from, yes, wait for it, DYLAN MAY!!! And even more to the surprise he even ran a full 30 odd yards (I’ve seen him run faster to the bar though) to put the ball over the keeper and into the net after an excellent defence splitting pass from Peter Wetheridge.  At the back the defence soaked up the attacking pressure like a sponge.

But our case was not helped as Jack went off half way through with a re-occurring injury.

The second half is where it all went Pete Tong.  One of Old Actonians forwards decided to take the game to us and ran us ragged through out the second half, it was like he had just turned up because he was no where to be seen in the first half. They scored an early goal and from then on it all went down hill, conceding 2 goals from schoolboy defending.  We then lost Martyn through an injury, which meant we had to play out the final 15 minutes with 10 men. We then lost our confidence and patience and conceded a fourth goal, which was actually a very good finish by Old A’s only player of the game.

Special thanks to Buzz for stepping in and refereeing at the eleventh hour, after losing our ref the night before the game.

But all the boys played with their hearts on the sleeves and cannot be faulted for their commitment.

There’s always next week!
