SAL – 30th November 2002
A very good afternoon for the Cars 7s after a sloppy start...... It all started when the representative for polytechnic came into our dressing room & told us who the ref was and what pitch we were playing on etc,etc - he left us with advice to definitely get a valuables bag, because the local youth were to be seen pinching stuff in the past... that wasn't the exact expression he used, but for all those in the changing rooms fell on the floor with unstoppable laughterRazz & Colin were definitely not in the changing rooms, as they turned up with about 3.5 mins left to start the game. Poly had a bad goal difference before the game & not a very good league position, so I guess we all thought that it would an easy match. Just goes to prove how wrong you can be when it comes to SAL games. Over confidence was our weakness in the first 20 mins as we tried to play like the 1st team by looking for the fancy ball instead of playing it simple.
As a result, Poly took the lead with a well worked move & neat chip for a finish. By this time there was a massive gap in the centre of the park. Dylan & James were being outnumbered & outmastered. Tactical advice from Razz for the wingers (Pete & Danny Gazz) to push more into the middle and help out worked a treat. Cars dominated the rest of the half with a good recovery and a few missed opportunities from Alan Thake and a penalty from Colin. If anyone can me how the ref gave the penalty then they are welcome because from where I was Dylan seemed like he fell over from exhaustion after running 50 yards to catch up! Answers on a postcard please!
John Hicks was having a particular good game at right back along with Steve, Razz & Andy. Steve spoiled it all by throwing his toys out the pram when he wasn't allowed to take the penalty - an amusing scene as you can imagine!! Even more amusing was Steve shouting at Hicks to push up when the defence tried to play offside trap.
Second half, a Thakey goal from the keeper's mistake put Cars 2-1 up after a nice though ball from Colin. I don't know quite what the keeper shouted at him as he scored but he was spoken to by the ref. Another penalty, after Matt had been fouled in the box put Cars 3-1 up.
Poly gathered themselves and came back with a late goal after Markie had pushed a header onto the post. This was how it ended. Anyone notice that Dylan after approx 65 mins on the pitch, picks an opposition player to pick on and then winds him up continually until the end of game?
8s next week.....
