SAL Junior Novets Cup – 1st November 2003
Carshalton secured their passage through to the next round of the SAL Junior Novets Cup courtesy of a well taken treble from MOM John Smith – his first goals for eighteen months.
With the two sides struggling in the league, this game offered both the chance to forget recent results and enjoy some welcome cup action at Kew’s Riverside Drive ground. It was Carshalton though that straight from the start made their intentions clear as they went looking for goals and that elusive first win of the season, but despite several chances to open the scoring early on, had nothing to show for all their hard endeavour. However, the first goal was worth waiting for. John Smith seized on a through ball, closed in on goal and superbly slotted home. Although the home side gave the visitor’s defence some anxious moments, it was the team from Beddington Lane that had the best of the first half, but found themselves unable to add to their lead.
Kew came out after the break in determined mood and immediately put pressure on the Cars back four. As the half progressed the team in green and white was struggling and it was no surprise when after a good run and cross from the tricky home winger, the young Kew forward finding himself unmarked, headed home the equaliser past keeper Mark Brown.
The home side’s leveller was just the kick-up the backside Cars needed, resulting in them stepping up their game and deservedly retaking the lead from Smith’s second of the contest. The outcome of this cup-tie was finally confirmed when Smith rounded off a good afternoons work for Cars by completing his hat-trick when a pass into the box gave him enough time to take a touch, steady himself and fire home an unstoppable shot to kill off the Kew challenge.
Carshalton’s reward for this victory is a second round away journey to the winners of the Winchmore Hill 7th XI versus Polytechnic 8th XI game. Polytechnic the side who on the opening day of the season put fourteen without reply past the Cars 8th XI.
