SAL Cup – 29th October 2005
Confidence was flowing as the 7s, having only lost one match this season, strode out on Pitch 2 to play EBOG 7s in a cup game. Losing the toss, we had to play into the sun in the second half. Unfortunately we couldn’t blame this for the loss of the first goal. Ten minutes in, ‘keeper Mark Brown took a quick throw out to Mike Hammond, not seeing the EBOG forward waiting, who collected the ball and passed the ball into the net.
Carshalton just could not get their game together; simple passing seemed impossible against a decidedly average EBOG side. I would like to comment on how the 7s created chances but this wasn’t the case, they just couldn’t get their game together.
Half time came and the team still hadn’t got out of second gear. Pete Taylor soon fired the team up with a few choice words! The game restarted brightly for Carshalton with some flowing moves, putting EBOG under extreme pressure.
Then good work from Jim Armstrong set Adam Lemon free who after some tricky footwork finished with aplomb passed a stranded ‘keeper. Carshalton pushed on making chance after chance, only to see the EBOG ‘keeper in sensational form.
Jon Smith saw a stunning left footed effort turned over the bar. Jim Armstrong and Rick Morris also saw their goal bound efforts thwarted by the opposition ‘keeper. Finally the breakthrough came. After some good passing through midfield, Adam Lemon was set free down the right after dribbling passed a couple of defenders he squared the ball for Rick Morris who (actually managed to) scored into an empty net.
2-1 and fully deserved. The 7s pushed on for more goals but to no avail.
Job done. The sign of a great team is to win when playing badly. The 7s march on!
