SAL Division 5 - 31st March 2007

We began the match with the worst performance we've put in all season. Make that the worst performance by any team in any season. One successful pass was becoming a challenge and Kew were all over us. 35 minutes in, a tactical switch saw Jay Breen move back into midfield, Matt Boymon move out to the left and myself moving up front. Within minutes, Breen brought the ball down in his own half and sent Adam Lemon through one on one with the 'keeper, Lemo coolly rounded him and passed the ball into the net. 1-0 up and it was totally against the run of play.

We went in at half time knowing we'd been let off. We began the second half better, enjoying more of the possession and looking more confident. 10 minutes into the second half, Tony Barrett moved out of the defence with the ball, his next action is usually a 50 yard punt down field but he instead sent myself through into the Kew penalty area, I moved in and pulled the ball back to Jim Armstrong, whose first touch saw him go past his marker but at an almost impossible angle he floated in at the near post to make it 2-0.

That was my last involvement as Clark replaced Clark - Rick obviously deciding that with so many fixtures on the horizon, he needed to keep his best player fresh and injury free.

Soon after, Steve Hayes was on the deck holding his head and no-one was quite sure why.  He wasn’t even sure, because he doesn't remember a thing.  But soon after, even though there was fear of a concussion, Dylan May sent him up the right wing where he skipped past the full-back and no closer than 45 yards from goal, he glanced up and lobbed the Kew 'keeper who began to back-pedal as the ball dropped perfectly into the corner of the net.  It was an outrageous attempt and the goal of the season without question.  Steve's memory of the goal is - much like the earlier incident - vague to say the least.

In the final 10 minutes, many would blame Armstrong for allowing Kew back into it. So would I. His handball in the area gifted them a penalty, which was struck home with conviction.  Some have said it was better than Jay Breen's penalty the previous week.

Not a minute later, Kew burst down the right and wormed their way in as their striker blasted in at the near post from close range.  Marky did well to get a hand to it in fairness.  We had put ourselves under such unnecessary pressure and goal difference could be a factor at the end too.

A few handbags were exchanged with seconds remaining, but we held out and grabbed an important 3 points to keep up the title race.

Man of the match - Jay Breen. When he moved into midfield he took the game by the scruff of the neck. That said, some of his efforts on goal, including the 40 yard free-kick, were dreadful.
