SAL Division 7 – 4th February 2006
Then we had the visit of Actonian 9s. Our side was bolstered by the introduction of Vets stalwart Wayne Stone in goal. Wayne said he would help us out before the game, but I must admit he didn’t say he would help us out during the game, commanding, assured, athletic, all Wayne's words. But once he got used to the step up in standard from the old smellies called vets he looked ten years younger.
Anyway after much early pressure from Carshalton we found ourselves 1 down to a great strike and that’s how it remained until halftime when I gave a team talk much like that of Martin Luther King or Churchill would have, had they done halftime team talks. The only difference was that every other word was "colourful", mainly because we were 1 down to a team that didn’t stop whinging, crying about every decision, especially psycho forward who really isn’t the full ticket.
Anyway after more pressure in the second half and four corners in a row, Martin finally put one were I told him to. My vicious volley was blocked and Tom T fired home. Shortly after, Scott Shew was lucky not be sent off for a tackle that was high, late and shocking to see. The only reason he didn’t go was you cant be sent off for tackling your own players. Order was restored when Adrian put us 2-1 up, and then ran clean through to make it 3-1. But anyway its still 2-1 because all he did was run until he ran into the keeper, a miss that could of cost us if not for a great save from Wayne pushing a goal bound shot onto the post.
Funniest action of the day has to be Martin "Haystacks" Shew meeting their Big Daddy Sloth in a 50/50 tackle and although it was funny to watch, the subsequent wave and loss of life in Southeast Asia was an unfortunate consequence. I'm also concerned for the mental health of defender Alan Barrett who doesn’t seem to be focused, leaving the club after 4 pies and not making any contact with the club until the following week.
Cheers Wayne for helping out and up the Hammers.
