WSYL Invitational Cup Semi Final - 15th January 2006
A game that we should have won by more than the final score.
Whitton started the game the brighter of the two teams, but failed to put us under any serious pressure. We gradually started to edge ourselves into the game with some nice possession football. As the game developed, Whitton were struggling to keep pace with our midfield mix of Jack T, Mark, Jack L & Liam , from playing nice flowing football in linking play with our forwards. As our possession increased and scoring opportunities, we still wanted that one extra touch or pass, which was allowing Whitton to smother any possible shot that we might have had. Our break through finally came in the 18th minute with Harry trying to pass the ball through to the unmarked Max in the centre of the penalty box, was unfortunately for Whitton, turned into his own net by their defender trying to cut out the pass. Minutes later we increased our lead with Harry stabbing the ball home to finish off a fine move down our left hand side. With half time approaching and us hoping to keep them at stalemate, we allowed their midfield player to reduce the deficit with us, not closing him down quick enough, to strike the ball home from the edge of the box.
The second half turned into a good game of flowing cup tie football between the two sides, with us creating scoring chances but taking too long in getting our shot in. Although Whitton were playing long balls into our half of the field, they were finding it hard to get past our defensive partnership of Connor & Jack H. It was only in the final, very long 5 minutes, when Whitton went for broke, by bringing on a extra forward that they produced any significant pressure on our goal and calling Josh into action.
Overall a great game of football that was enjoyable to watch and we deserved to win.
Well done to all the boys and supporters for their efforts & encouragement to the team.
