WSYL - 26th February 2006
A game in which we didn’t really get going at all against a strong physical team with a very fast forward who we struggled to cope with.
Having played at the venue in years gone by, when it was owned by Barclays Bank, I was expecting the pitch to be in a reasonable state. What we found was one with no straight lines and in one location 3 touchlines, even the goals did not line up with each other. Even so this was to have no effect on our laid back performance of giving them too much time and not competing like we should have done. Cannons plan which was very effective for them, was to punt the ball at every opportunity for their pace forward to run onto. All three of Cannons goals came in this manner where we had no one to compete with him.
The boys tried to play some football at times but our final ball seemed to bobble at the last moment or was over hit and out for a goal kick. With the chances we did create, a draw would have been a fair result but it was just one of those days where the ball would just not run for us, although the goals we scored were taken very well.
This was a very frustrating game not just for the boys but also for our spectators, and had an effect on the boys performance mainly due to an ineffective first half referee, whom they changed at half time, which caused tension between both supporters. I even had to encourage two players to come out for the second half. It’s just a shame that the second half ref did not cover the whole game as all the problems caused would have been averted.
