WSYL - 19th March 2006
A game we should have won by a lot more than the score line reflects. Many of the boys seemed to think today was going to be a stroll, as we had beaten them 18 – 0 at home.
Hopefully they will now realise that not all games will be the same, finding out the hard way today.
Our first goal arrived after a minute and half of play which could be why the boys thought this was going to an easy game. Samba playing three at the back on a small pitch, competed for everything, determined not to get hammered again. With a different goalkeeper to the first game, he denied us on a number of occasions with some good saves. Even so, the boys were hanging on to the ball too long, rather than play a simple pass to an unmarked team-mate and therefore got crowded out and lost possession. We finished the half 3 – 0 but Samba seemed far more determined in winning the ball than we were.
We started the second half passing to each other efficiently but still not to our usual standard. The boys could also do with communicating to each other better, as there were times when two players were going for the same ball and neither getting it. With the score at 4 – 0 the boys got the wake up call they needed as Samba reduced the deficit with a well taken strike. The boys responded by upping the tempo and goals 5 and 6 soon followed, as well as a denied penalty for us when Jack T was brought down. We finished the game with a flurry of chances that we failed to convert as their keeper / defenders were getting contact on the shots.
Lets hope you have all learned a valuable lesson today in not being complacent with opposition, just because you have already beaten them convincingly earlier in the season. You would have been punished today had you been playing a better team.
Looking forward to seeing next weeks return of the boys normal good standard of play.
