Friendly -  20th July 2005

Another useful exercise for the boys and managers.  Players have an opportunity to get used to the full size pitch and managers get a chance to experiment with positions and see where the areas are to be worked on in pre season training.  We have identified a number of areas for improvement, but given this was just their second run-out as a team, there was also plenty of encouragement.

Although scorelines are not important, it was disappointing that having gone 3-1 up we did not impose ourselves more.  Play was generally scrappy - typically pre season really.

Carshalton on the Hill opened the scoring a bit against the run of play with a stunning free kick from just outside the area.  Nothing anyone could have done to stop that.  We equalised soon after when Kristian went on a bit of a mazy run and finished from an acute angle.  Mike then added our second with a shot from just inside the penalty box.  Ruaridh seemed to put us in control with a clean strike into the roof of the net.

As our players tired and played in unfamiliar positions, Carshalton on the Hill pulled a well worked goal back, only for Arran to have a shot from distance that was too hot for the keeper to make it 4-2.  With time running out, Carshalton on the Hill pounced on some hesitant defending to draw back within one goal.  This proved to be the final score.  Nice to win, but that doesn't matter.  What is important is that we learn collectively from the good bits and the bad points of this evening's game.  Though we try not to single out individuals in a team game, I thought Dan had another excellent game in goal and Chris excelled at right back.  Other players had good games, but I thought these two stood out.

When we pass the ball we look a very good team, but we have tended to fall into the mini soccer trap of trying to beat everyone on the pitch.  In defence there is work to do, but that is to be expected as this is a whole different ball game.  Well played boys.  Thanks to our supporters for the very large turnout and the impeccable manner in which they supported the team.  And thanks to Carshalton on the Hill FC for hosting the game.  Our best wishes to them for the coming season.

Next training session is on Thursday 11 August 6 - 7.15pm.
