West Surrey Youth League Premier Elite Division - 16th October 2005
After last week's disappointing performance, the boys were sent on their way with a few home truths ringing in their ears. The character of a side is best shown after a poor performance. How would we react?
Well, in the first minute we let them straight through our midfield and defence, but apart from that, our first half display was excellent. We dominated possession and when we got the ball wide, we looked dangerous. Indeed from the best move of the game we took the lead. Luke, Ruaridh and Jake exchanges one - twos, Jake burst down the left and drove a superb cross which was swept in by Arran. Not long after we were 2-0 up. This time it was Arran who raced down the right and drove a perfect cross in for Mike to sweep home.
Halftime came too soon for us, as we were really getting up a head of steam. Unfortunately our second half performance was disappointing and not really good enough. We stopped passing the ball and either snatched at our clearances, or did not attempt to clear at all. We were pegged back to 2-1and came under a lot of pressure, much of it self imposed. Rocks Lane sensed an equaliser and there were a very uncomfortable 10 minutes until Kristian settled matters in injury time. Man of the Match Jake fed a superb defence splitting ball for Kristian to latch on to, advance on the keeper and knock the ball into the net from 18 yards - a very composed finish.
Infinitely better than last week, but certainly still plenty of room for improvement. Mitch had an excellent game in midfield and central defence and is proving a very valuable addition to the team. Ben and Owen dominated in central defence in the first half and Arran and Jake were always threatening on the wings. It is a mark of where we have got to this season that we were disappointed with our performance at the end of a match where we had beaten last season's champions 3-1.
Next week we face Molesey Juniors who will be a very tough proposition going by their results so far this season. Many thanks to our parents and supporters for the wonderful encouragement and also for setting up the pitch and clearing up afterwards. Thanks also to all in the kitchen - Colette, Kirsty, Jane and Tony (sorry if I missed anyone out). Thanks also to all Rocks Lane management and supporters for their support and kind words. Your boys were a credit with their behaviour on the pitch. We really enjoyed the game which was played in excellent spirit by both sets of players. Good luck for the rest of the season.
