Surrey Cup - 27th November 2005

Our dreams of a long run in the Surrey Cup were thwarted by a very impressive Hamsey Rangers side whose front line are all at the Fulham Academy.  And that was the difference between the sides.  Whereas we were trying to pass the ball into the net and not really taking responsibility when the chances arose, Hamsey's players seemed to score with almost every opportunity they made

It was a bitterly cold morning and unfortunately this affected the boys first half display with poor Michael not even playing because of the extreme cold.  We were second best and went in at halftime 0-3 down, with Hamsey playing some devastating football in our half.

We asked for the boys to show some pride and to battle in the second half and what we got was a complete transformation.  We dominated the half, both in terms of possession and also territory.  We created plenty of chances but had to rely on the goal of the game to break our duck.  Mitchell's volley from the edge of the box was a bit special!  No sooner had we seemed back in it, than Hamsey scored again.  Lewis scored getting in front of the keeper from a corner to bring us back into the game but 2 late goals as we played 3 at the back and pushed forward gave a bit of a false scoreline.

No doubt Hamsey deserved their win and we wish them all the best for the rest of the competition.  they are a very good and well drilled team.  We played well and every boy gave 100%, but we did look weak when defending.  That is not a criticism of the defence, but we do need to defend better as a team.  Sometimes we end up with the whole midfield ploughing forward and we were badly exposed for most of their goals.

Back into cup action again this week with the visit of Rocks Lane in the quarter finals of the League Cup.  Kick off is at 10am and all supporters are welcome.
