WSYL Premier Elite Division - 22nd January 2006
I thought I'd give it a few days reflection before writing this report, but I still have the same thought going through my head, namely - how on earth did we lose this game. We must have had at least 60% possession and virtually camped in their half from the 20th minute!! In truth we know why we lost. We failed to put away the chances we created.
We started scrappily and after a couple of chances for either side in the even opening exchanges, it was Molesey who took the lead with a follow up to a brave save from Daniel. It was encouraging to see the reaction of our boys after this setback, because we started to play a bit of football and created enough clearcut chances to be at very least level by halftime.
The game was there for the taking and we threw everything at Molesey and were caught on the break as we increased the pressure to go 0-2 down, then 0-3 down, then 0-4 down. But we kept battling and scored the goal of the game. Jake, Luke and Ruaridh built the play on the left, before Ruaridh picked out Arran on the right hand edge of the penalty area and he blasted an unstoppable shot past the keeper. We still had clear chances to add to our tally, but it was not to be.
Our players were upset at the end, many close to tears, which shows the level of commitment they have for the team. However, we need to get this into perspective. What we are looking for at this age is commitment, willingness to learn, individual technical improvement and team awareness in our first season at 11 a side. We are certainly seeing that and every boy can be proud of his performance. Every boy can also look at areas they can improve in, as that is the best way to learn. Paul and I, and your parents and spectators are very proud of the performance you gave on Sunday. Results are not important - only performances.
Credit to Gary and his Molesey boys who defended with their lives and put their chances away with aplomb. That's why they are top of the league. The finishing was the difference between the sides. Whereas Molesey shot powerfully away from the keeper when they had their chances, we either took an extra touch, or shot straight at the keeper or shot with insufficient power. Guess what the theme of training will be on Tuesday night boys?!
