WSYL Premier Elite Division - 12th March 2006

I thought we had finally sussed it, as this was one of our better starts to a game. The modified formation seemed to suit the individuals. We were up for it from the whistle, strong and eager.  We set the tempo and it was great to see Ruaridh coming in from the cold and long may it last, wee man.

The pressure we created started to tell and we had chances and should have scored from a corner, as the ball cried out to be buried.  Finally we got our just desserts when Arran scored with a fine header from a measured cross by Kristian.  This was particularly pleasing to the coach, as Kristian did exactly what was asked of him and was very influential in this early pressure with some telling crosses, which caused all sorts of problems for the visitors.  Well done pal - very good, particularly your strength on the ball and your work off the ball tracking back.

No prizes for what needs to be said next.  We were caught out whilst we were still celebrating which was the cruelest of blows and as in many cases this year against the run of play.  However we didn’t wilt.  Fair play to us.  This didn’t change any of our positivity.  But once again with no reflection of this half's football, we switched off and we conceded again.

Please note at this point to a man (or rather boy), we played the better football.  Whatever the score was at this point we were playing good football and this is what it is all about.

It’s a real shame we have to acknowledge the second half.

This is how it goes.  A couple of boys couldn’t regroup for the second period and this impacted immediately. The shape went as some boys attempted to cover the shortfall. We start to make errors and gaps appeared. This then has a knock on effect to the score line. Progressively we then started to fall away as some boys struggled to cope with the sustained pressure.

Not to take anything away from Wimbledon but this gradual decline provided a platform to flatter the opponent’s performance.

A couple of boys have to be acknowledged for their commitment and desire to the bitter end. Last week it was the all action man Ryan and this week a phenomenal effort by Arran.  Its real inspirational stuff.

Every year it happens.  A team fights back at the end of the season and turns it around.  Everyone needs to find that extra bit - boys, parents and coaches.  Come on the Greens.  We can do this.

Many thanks to Stewart, who ran the line for us this week, and to all those who helped out with the goals as usual.
