Surrey Youth & U21 League - 10th September 2006
A disappointing result from a game where we should have been home and dry by half - time.
The game was of two very different half displays from the team. The first half being good at times, to a second half performance where we only played football once, which resulted in our equalising goal from Cheznie.
We started the game very brightly, having the upper hand and putting their back line under pressure, unfortunately taking too long in getting our shots in. Oxshott's only game plan was to send the ball long through the middle, for their forwards to run onto. We took the lead, with some first time passing between Terry, Chesnie & Harry which enabled us to find Jack L unmarked in the penalty area to strike home. Despite us having the majority of play, Oxshott did however possess a threat from their ball over the top of our defence. Oxshott equalised on the stroke of half time with a penalty from a foul which seemed outside the area, but the ref. saw it differently.
With our half – time talk of making the boys get up quicker as a unit, get the ball on the floor and get it wide, they performed the complete opposite. Oxshott kept to their game plan, which we made easy for them, and if it wasn't for Josh in goal, this would have been a defeat for us. Oxshott took the lead early into the new half, when their forward latched onto a through ball and fired home. Having conceded in this manner, we continued to play the same way despite the managements instructions from the sidelines to move up straight away, when we had regained possession.
I know, as our season progresses, and our stamina and confidence increases, there will be an improvement in the understanding of urgency within the game.
