Surrey Youth & U21 League - 17th September 2006

Our first win of the season,  against a side who narrowly missed out on promotion to the top division,  was a very rewarding result.

Carshalton,  like last week had the upper hand in the first half and were rewarded with our efforts with two goals from Harry & Cheznie.  The main difference of the half was we seemed more direct in front of goal, with Worcester Park relying heavily on getting the ball wide to their right hand side player,  who was a constant threat to get behind our full back,  and pull the ball back for their on running forwards.  It was from one of these through balls that Worcester Park could have taken the lead, but a last ditch block near the goal post from Connor, trickled the ball wide for a corner. Although they continued to play on and score,  the ball had clearly gone out of play. Although we were 2 – 0 up it was a very close competitive half.

It was very important that we started the new half in the correct manner as who ever scored the next goal, could well change the outcome of the game. We started fairly well, then went into a 15 minute panic mode of just kicking the ball with no thought of where it was going and the majority of time straight back to the opposition. The boys need to relax more with the ball, start thinking more and realising just how much space and time there is to put their foot on the ball and lay off an easy pass and keep possession. Worcester Park took advantage of this and were getting behind our back line but were let down with their finishing.  Again Josh had another good handling display  in goal. Gradually we started to get back into the game moving the ball quicker up field and wide to stretch their defence and better link up play.  It was from two through balls that we sealed victory with goals from Harry & Niall. We could well have increased our goal tally but for the performance of their keeper.

This was a good team performance all round with good solid displays from our new players Terry, Ryan Niall & Matthew, with Terry narrowly missing out on the M O M to Max.

For our next game, lets try and have more composure when in possession, rather than kick and hope, as we did at times today. Lets start each match more alert and focused.

Well done boys.
