Surrey Youth & U21 League - 12th November 2006
Having not played for three weeks, and not on a regular basis, this was by far our best performance to date. Or was it because we could all have a lie in today? I was expecting a tight close game today.
We started today with a few players slotting in at different positions to their norm as we only had the bare 11. Wandgas decided to take advantage of the slope and breeze for the first half, but came across a very different Carshalton side to our previous games. Today was the first time we actually looked like a team with plenty of passing going on and actually competing and winning headers. Our opening goal came from some excellent play from Niall out on the right touch line before pulling the ball back across goal from the by line for Harry to shoot in off the defender on the goal line. We continued to press for more goals and with a bit more communication between the boys and passing the ball rather than try and beat more than one player at a time we would have extended our lead. Wandgas drew back level just before the break with a diagonal ball over the top of our back line which they reacted to quicker than we did. Other than the goal and a couple of other balls over the top of our defence, we were pretty much in control although we need to be a bit more tighter on the wide players.
As we started the new half, we did not have to wait too long for Harry to regain the lead for us with a well taken goal after holding off their centre back and calmly slotting the ball pass the advancing keeper. After this Wandgas were finding it very hard to compete with our domination of the half with all boys working well as a team, tracking back and getting the ball out wide to either flank where we were having the better of them. The goals were all taken very well with two headed goals from Max, Harry completing his hat trick before Niall finished the scoring with a low shot from just inside the area. As I had mentioned earlier far too many times after regaining possession we tended to dwell on the ball too long, we need to get into the habit of releasing the ball much earlier, it will also make the game a lot easier for yourself.
Overall this was a very comfortable win and the score line did not flatter us, the team played so well as a unit that it was unfair to have a MOM today.
Well done boys, a great all round team performance.
