Exactly what was required all round. This was an ideal pre season warm up. We started a little ring rusty; too quiet; the passing was a bit loose and up in the air, we didn’t use the width and struggled to stay onside. However this was pretty short lived and progressively this became less and less evident as the games went by.
Heads came up. I could hear all the boys and we got the ball on the floor and showed what a good passing side we are. Teams struggled to get us out of their half. The standard of football improved with each game and with that we were rightly rewarded for our endeavours. Indeed it would be fair to say that if for a little more composure in front of goal, we may have had a few more. It should be noted though that we showed some real steely resolve to force the goal in the game against Ashford Town.
I think one of the main positives was that there were times last season when we struggled in areas to physically compete but we mustered to the challenge showing real courage and determination all the way across the park. Defensively we worked together as a unit and this will have as much of an impact as scoring goals up top if we can forge this into our weekly games.
If anybody doubted that we were in the wrong division this season, we will definitely have given them something to think about. We played good football and everyone on the pitch and the touchline can take confidence from that.
Well done boys lets have some more of it on Tuesday, where for the first time this season we should have the full squad.
Thanks to Kelvin and his colleagues at Ashford Town for the day. They even got the weather right for us! We look forward to seeing them again soon.
Each player was awarded a ticket to attend an Ashford Town Ryman Premier Division home match for two adults and two children. As I understand it Andrea and Karen will try to organise a family day out to see the home game with Carshalton Athletic which we think is on February the 10th. Sounds like a good plan to me.
Thanks to all the volunteer assistant referees (aka linesmen). It is appreciated.
