Carshalton U12s completed their preparations for the new season with a morale boosting win over Hamsey Rangers at Beddington Park. Having lost 2-6 to the same side in the Surrey Cup last season, this was going to be our toughest pre season examination. And the boys passed with flying colours. We look a much more compact outfit this season. Our defence coped admirably with Hamsey’s attack which had pulled us apart last season. Every defender did their job and it was very pleasing to see them function as a unit, rather than 4 individuals. Ryan once again produced crunching tackles, Owen gave a captain’s performance, Charlie had another excellent game at left back and Mike performed well at right back. The midfield had a much better shape with Luke playing the holding role and allowing Ruaridh the freedom to go forward and pick their defence with some excellent passing. Out wide, Jake and Arran posed a constant threat. And up front we looked a real handful with David and Simon combining well and giving their defenders no rest.

When we made our substitutions we continued to be the stronger side. Chris came in at right back, Ben at right midfield and Mitchell in central midfield. After an even first 20 minutes, we became more dominant, forcing Hamsey onto the back foot. Indeed in the last 40 minutes I can’t recall Dan having any saves to make. Given the power and speed of the opposition, this really is an achievement. The only goal of the game was scored by David when he timed his run perfectly to get in front of the defence, advanced on the keeper and cracked a right foot shot into the corner of the net.

Thanks to Trevor, Mike and their boys for a wonderful game of football. Good luck to them in the Tandridge League. Hopefully they will win that after finishing runners up last season.

Well done to all our boys who can be proud of their own performances. The season starts this Sunday with a trip in the League to last season’s Tandridge League champions Beecholme Colts at Northey Avenue, Cheam. Meet 9.15 for 9.25am at the latest. Great pre season, so let’s keep doing the basics and hopefully get off to a good start in what will be a very tough division.
