Surrey Youth & U21 League Cup - 24th September 2006
Against completely unknown opposition, Carshalton did enough to run out deserved winners in this League Cup tie. The game was played on a dry, "challenging" surface, which did not lend itself to flowing football. However, in the first half Carshalton totally dominated without being able to put the ball into the back of the net; the Redbrick keeper having a particularly good game.
Changes were made in the second half and at last we managed to get some width to our game. Our first goal followed another sustained spell of pressure and after a scramble from a corner, right back Chris was in the right place at the right time to deflect the ball home. The second followed a sweet move down the right and a low cross was met by the perfectly timed run of Michael to volley into the net from close range.
Redbrick threatened sporadically on the break but the defence had an excellent game all round, with Charlie's contribution especially in the first half quite outstanding. Dan had to make one save late on but the ball was cleared comfortably enough. There were plenty of near misses for us to add to our score, but we found their keeper in fine form.
Whilst there is no issue this week with our workrate and attitude, it is clear to all I'm sure that we need to improve our distribution, especially when we play in the league. We are still playing too narrow and this is something for us all - coaches, players and parents - to think about for next week. Wonderful support again from both sets of supporters.
Good luck to Redbrick in their league campaign. They are a raw side at this stage with a lot of potential, and are well managed with supportive parents..
No idea as yet who we have in the Surrey Cup next week, as the draw won't be made until Monday, as the preliminary round is being played today.
