Surrey Youth & U21 League - 8th October 2006

A harsh lesson learned today.  If you fail to put away your chances at this level and give away soft goals at crucial times, you get punished.  We started the match in fine form and opened the scoring midway through the first half.  At long last we used the width of the pitch to release Arran down the right.  His brilliant run and cross was met by the onrushing Simon who finished neatly from 8 yards.  A training ground move.

Unfortunately we were unable to hold onto the lead and the manner in which we conceded the equaliser was extremely disappointing.  We failed to deal with a routine corner that should have been cleared at the front post and the ball cannoned in off Daniel in goal.  Epsom played some excellent passing football, making us run all over the pitch, rather than sticking to our positions.  When this happens, you are going to be picked off.  And so it was that we conceded another to go in 1-2 down.

Epsom scored a magnificent free kick into the top corner and then the broke at the end to add a fourth.  Dan did make a couple of excellent saves and we missed a few chances ourselves.  The final scoreline was probably a bit harsh, but Epsom were deserved winners.

We need to learn our lessons from this game.  Pass and move, spread the play, let the ball do the work, hold your positions, create space for yourself and others - all these things we drum into the boys at training and we saw what this can achieve when watching Epsom Eagles.  That is what we have to aim to emulate.  If we do that, we have pace in abundance up front and the goals will come.

Another tough game coming up this Sunday with the visit of Molesey Juniors, so early to bed on Saturday night boys and come down to Beddington Park prepared and ready to learn from last week - 9.15am in the changing rooms.
