Surrey Youth & U21 League - 22nd October 2006
Once again (and I'm sure everyone is sick of reading this each time) we failed to get a result out of a game we more than enjoyed the balance of play. Tooting & Mitcham's management agreed we deserved at least something and the scoreline certainly does not reflect the performance.
I thought we outfought the league champions and at times outplayed them. Unfortunately we let ourselves down by throwing away 3 goals - we simply have to cut these mistakes out if we are to get the results our play deserves.
There were many positives to take from this performance. Firstly the attitude of every player was spot on. There is a belief that we are turning the corner with our performances, and the results will come. At least 3 boys had their best games for the club and many others had excellent games. Paul and I were absolutely delighted with the manner in which we played. Lots of commitment and a concentrated effort to play the ball on the floor and get the ball into the wide areas. We caused Tooting & Mitcham to go on the defensive for long periods, something we did not achieved in our 3 meetings last season.
Mitchell's goal came when we were 0-3 down and camped in their half. His long range shot from outside the box skidded off the greasy surface and through the keeper. An excellent strike and the very least we deserved.
A reminder to all that while we would like to be winning games, what we are really looking to achieve this season is a step up in the development of the boys as individuals and as a team. There can be no doubt this group have come on leaps and bounds in recent weeks.
I would like to express my thanks to all the parents who continue to give positive encouragement to their boys. This is critical for their development and we ask you to continue playing this vital role.
We have a chance to put things right in 2 weeks time when we host Tooting & Mitcham in the league cup. No game this week because of absences, so enjoy the weekend off!!
