Surrey Youth & U21 League - 14th January 2007

After last week's debacle, this was a much better performance.  OK the result doesn't look too clever, but it is not about results - it is all about performances, attitude and development.  We played the team that will be champions this season in my opinion.  A very "professional" outfit who pass the ball and move off the ball.  Something for us to aim for ourselves.

We started very brightly with David performing well in an unaccustomed position wide on the right.  Mitchell opened the scoring with an assured finish from just outside the box.  And we had Epsom on the rack when Ryan just put the ball over the bar from a corner.

Epsom then settled and scored some excellent goals to lead 2-1 at half time.  We conceded a further 3 goals shortly after half time and many teams would have folded in the light of this.  But I am very pleased to report that the boys rolled their sleeves up, grabbed the game by the scruff of the neck and probably had the better of the last 15 minutes.  Ruaridh had a couple of chances to make the score more respectable, and Mitchell had a fine free kick at the death, but on each occasion the keeper made excellent saves.

I thought Dan had a much improved game in goal and Luke filled in well as an emergency centre half - one last man clearance off the line was exemplary.  Most other boys came to the party as well with Arran having a fine game in the centre of midfield and Simon looking a constant threat on his own up front.  The overwhelming vote for man of the match though was Ryan who was like a man mountain at centre half... and anywhere else on the pitch he popped up.

So we can approach the next game in very good spirits.  We need to get back to our passing game very quickly and I expect confidence to return after the last 15 minutes we played against the best team we have played all season.  As disappointed as we were with the performance against Oxshott is as proud as Paul and I are with this performance, particularly the last 15 minutes.  Let's build on that.

REMEMBER - TRAINING IS THURSDAY AT 6.30PM AT POWERLEAGUE FOR THIS WEEK ONLY
