Surrey Youth & U21 League - 21st January 2007
Carshalton produced an indifferent performance but managed to come out on top. Too often the ball was in the air and when we did manage to get the ball down and play, we looked a different side.
Claygate opened the scoring after 10 minutes as the Carshalton defence failed to get a proper challenge in and the ball broke to a forward who slotted in at the near post to a huge roar from the travelling support. Carshalton continued to misfire for the majority of the half, but were gifted an equaliser as half time approached when the keeper was unfortunate to spill the ball at David's feet and he finished clinically. This was a pity for the keeper, as other than this he had a very impressive game.
We played better in the second half and scored the best goal of the game when Simon picked the ball up on the halfway line, committed the defence and squared for David to thump a shot high into the net from 12 yards. We did create a few more decent chances, but failed to take them. On the balance of play we deserved the win, but we have a lot of improving to do to get back to our level pre Christmas. I'm sure it will come if we start playing with confidence again.
A big test next week as we face Stoneleigh Athletic in the last 16 of the Surrey Cup. I'm sure we will be up for the task and improve our level of performance collectively.
Good luck to Claygate for the rest of the season. They stuck well to their task and will be disappointed not to have got a positive result from the game.
