Surrey Cup 5th Round - 4th February 2007

Our cup run finally came to an end today after a rousing second half performance which almost tipped the game in our favour.  Following the torrential rain all week and the games played yesterday, it was remarkable that the pitch was playable.  Only one area was really dodgy.  Both sides attempted to play football when it was possible.  Indeed Tooting & Mitcham would have been disappointed to be only 1 goal up at half-time as they managed to create a few good opportunities.  The only one they managed to score from was a fine drilled shot into the top corner from 18 yards.  We did not manage to play to our potential in the first period.

However, like so often this season, we came out transformed for the second half.  There was very little in it, with Carshalton probably edging it, when Mitchell spanked in another special.  This time a 25 yard volley which raised everyone in the green.  It looked like Carshalton would go on to take the win, but Tooting & Mitcham were the team to score the winning goal with an assured finish on the break with 5 minutes to go.  As much as we tried, we were unable to equalise.

Great game and another good advert for our level of youth football.  Tooting & Mitcham were a pleasure to host again, and we appreciate their managers' and supporters compliments.  Of course it is disappointing to lose, but we are seeing a lot to be proud of.  Of the stars on the pitch, Owen, Daniel and Chris had their best games of the season - outstanding performances guys.

Many thanks to all those who helped in the kitchen - Colette, Kirsty, Jane, Andrea and Tracey; to those who put up the goals (as always); to Phil Mander for the free of charge sign writing & advertising and running the line again; and a special mention to Michael who was so positive and understanding about our predicament regarding substitutions - a real team man.  Big thanks also to Tracey for all the hard work she has put in so far on organising and raising funds for the end of season tour.  There are a number of stars in our midst off the pitch as well as on it.
