Surrey Youth & U21 League - 18th March 2007
A very disappointing result for us. Having driven the 400 miles to Lightwater (just outside Berlin) the boys in green actually came out of the blocks like we have been asking them to all season. We went 1-0 up in 3 minutes with the best move of the game. Mitchell drilled his cross to the far post where David raced on to knock it in from close range. A quarter of an hour later and Carshalton were 2-0 up. A long throw on the left somehow missed the entire defence and Ban found himself in front of goal with an acre of space. He calmly slotted the chance. Carshalton took their foot off the pedal and were almost made to pay when Curley Park hit the post when it seemed easier to score.
Carshalton dominated the second half and hit the bar as well as forcing a couple of excellent saves from the keeper. Halfway through the half, Curley Park got themselves back into the game with a fine finish from 15 yards into the top corner. Carshalton re-established their 2 goal advantage when Arran out-muscled the centre half and prodded the ball home following a corner. Still Curley Park did not give up and coupled with some lamentable defending throughout the team, they came right back into the game. When the game was poised at 2-3, Daniel produced a wonderful tip over the bar which seemed to keep the 3 points going back up the M3, M25, A3, A24,... However we contrived to let them off the hook and conceded a goal in the last minute. Well done to Curley Park for their tenacity throughout the game.
Again a number of our boys simply did not want it today, which is very disappointing and not fair on the majority who worked very hard to play for the team. This simply isn't good enough for this division. Only 5 games left in our season and those who feel they were not contributing anything like they can, will have those 5 games to show what they really can do and demonstrate that they want to play at this level. Still there were positives. Dan had another good game in goal and we encouraged each other a lot better as a team. Simon did well as skipper and we showed in glimpses what we are capable of. We need to do that for the full hour from now on. Let's roll up those sleeves, work hard, take on board the advice and be honest with each other.
