WSYL - 14th September 2003
Carshalton's inaugural Premiership fixture ended in triumph after a very even encounter against last season's fourth-placed side in Thames Ditton. The home side had the better of the early exchanges with a forward firing over with a strong shot from the edge of area, and minutes later a similar effort was just off target. Carshalton then came quickly into the game and both sides played some good football, but it was a very tight affair, and clear cut chances were at a premium. Whyglaze probed away at the Carshalton defence and managed to force a number of corners and also a free-kick outside the area, but they failed to test the Carshalton keeper during this period of intense pressure. Julian Osei-Gyimah was then brought down outside the area on route to goal, but the free-kick cleared the bar. This was followed by Ben Gyamfi having a powerful shot brilliantly saved by the Whyglaze keeper. Then, as the half drew to a close, Ben Gyamfi again found himself played in on the right of goal, and this time he made no mistake by firing a fierce shot past the keeper to score against his previous club.
In the second half, Carshalton started well and it was not long before Daniel Johnson and Jamie Streat began to take command of the midfield, whilst Jezz Williams was giving the hosts all sorts of problems with his raids down the right flank. This signalled a period of Carshalton domination that eventually saw them increase their lead. Jezz Williams swung over a very dangerous corner that Julian Osei-Gyimah converted with a fine header that went in off the far post. Whyglaze now began to put pressure on the visitors, and their pacy forwards were sent goalward from halfway on a number of occasions, but they were quickly run down by the powerful Jack Malin, and then eventually squeezed off the ball whilst Robert Marsden closed down their shooting options. Lewis West was also having a tremendous game at the back despite carrying an injury that would eventually force him to retire. Whyglaze finally got the goal they deserved when a corner was not dealt with and a forward was on hand to score with a powerful shot from eight yards. The Carshalton response was to score three minutes later when Ben Gyamfi burst into the area and fired a glorious shot over the keeper. Robert Marsden then pulled off a tremendous save to keep out a superb shot. In the dying minutes Julian Osei-Gyimah was brought down by the keeper on the edge of the box. This resulted in a caution, but the free kick came to nothing.
