Surrey Cup - Preliminary Round - 21st September 2003

Carshalton won in a canter against Old Coulsdon and thereby earned an away tie in the next round against the Guildford & Shere Premier champions, St Francis Sports. The difference in class between the visitors and the fourth division Tandridge outfit quickly became evident. After only 2 minutes, the powerful Ben Gyamfi steamed on to a through ball and brushed aside all challenges before slipping the ball past the keeper. Six minutes later, the home defence was shredded by a fine passing move and once again, Ben Gyamfi was through on goal for an easy finish. Old Coulsdon now began to stem the tide, but they struggled to penetrate the final third where the Carshalton back four were in a mean mood. There then followed some very fluent passing moves from a sparkling Carshalton midfield that dominated the match from start to finish. Daniel Johnson and Jamie Streat were on top form in the middle of the park, and Samuel Mew and Jezz Williams looked dangerous on the flanks. On 17 minutes Ben Gyamfi scored his hat-trick after collecting another penetrating pass just inside the penalty area. The match was effectively over when Ben Gyamfi scored again on 28 minutes, and then Jamie Streat netted a minute later with a fine shot that curled into the far corner of the net. Just before the interval Adam Marie conceded a free-kick on halfway. As the Carshalton defence went to sleep, a forward was sent clear but Lewis West prevented a likely goal by getting in a last-ditch tackle.

The visitors started the second half slowly, and so ten minutes elapsed before Mo Fafona scored Carshalton's sixth with a sublime finish after excellent work by man-of-the-match Jezz Williams. This signalled a Coulsdon collapse as two minutes later the lightening quick Mo Fafona scored again with another typical trademark finish. The shots were now raining in on the Coulsdon goal, especially from Jezz Williams, and then Jack Keable went close when heading a Jezz Williams cross over the bar. Almost immediately after on 44 minutes,  Jamie Streat scored with a header from close range. Two minutes later the Coulsdon keeper pulled off a brilliant save from Jezz Williams, but the ball ran loose and Julian Osei-Gyimah shot into the unguarded net. Double figures arrived within a minute when Jezz Williams finally scored the goal he deserved. During the latter stages of the match, Carshalton lost all shape in the quest for more goals, and the pressure was such that Lewis West appeared to be playing up front. Thus, Coulsdon were able to launch a number of dangerous breakaways and Robert Marsden pulled off a couple of brilliant saves to deny the hosts a goal. The last minute saw a Coulsdon player sprint clean away, but he was rapidly closed down by Jack Malin and so Robert Marsden was able to make a brave save at the forward's feet. The match was memorable for the presence of a truly colossal Couldson player who easily dwarfed even Jack Malin and Ben Gyamfi, but fortunately for Carshalton he lacked their pace.
