WSYL - 5th October 2003
Carshalton were very unlucky not to secure a draw because they matched or surpassed the visitors in all departments except physical aggression and size. Both of Hanworth's goals were due to the home side's inability to clear their lines at set pieces. Carshalton took the lead, but lost out by those mistakes, and also had two goals disallowed and a penalty appeal turned down. The hosts started the better with Jezz Williams, Daniel Johnson and Jamie Streat prominent in midfield, and within three minutes Jamie Streat fired the ball into the Hanworth net from distance. Unfortunately, play had already been stopped for a foul on a Hanworth defender. The game developed into a hard physical battle for the midfield, with Carshalton struggling to compete with the physical strength and power of their larger opponents. Nevertheless, Carshalton made headway with some fine passing moves and some strong runs down the right flank by Jezz Williams. After ten minutes Carshalton had the ball in the net again courtesy of Louis Barron-Pell. However, this time the whistle had already been blown for an infringement on the Hanworth keeper. The visitors threatened mainly by means of long range shooting and any incursions were quickly snuffed out by the home defence. On 16 minutes, substitute Julian Osei-Gyimah put Carshalton in front by beating a Hanworth defender to a through ball and then knocking the ball under the advancing keeper. The game was then very evenly contested, but on 23 minutes Hanworth drew level after launching a free-kick into the penalty area. The Carshalton defenders repeatedly failed to clear the ball, and eventually it ran into the path of an unmarked forward who fired home from close range. After this scrappy goal, Carshalton conceded a very similar one six minutes later when an excellent corner created mayhem in the penalty area.
The second half saw the physical and robust style of the Hanworth midfield unsettle Carshalton, but the hosts remained a constant threat, mainly through the excellent performances of Julian Osei-Gyimah and Jezz Williams. Jamie Streat also had a good game, but wandered too far upfield on several occasions. This resulted in some dangerous surges out of midfield by Hanworth. However, these were dealt with by the solid Carshalton defence, in which Jack Malin and Lewis West were particularly impressive against some very large opponents. Hanworth then hit the top of the bar with a glorious long-range shot, and a few minutes later the Carshalton centre-backs each snuffed out a very dangerous attack down the middle. For their part, Carshalton saw a couple of shots cleared off the line, and the Hanworth keeper then made a terrific save from Jezz Williams. Julian Osei-Gyimah was then put through on goal, but went down under the challenge of a Hanworth defender in the area. The resulting penalty appeals were turned down by the referee. As the game wore on, Carshalton kept up the pressure in search of an equaliser, but found it difficult to penetrate the granite-like Hanworth defence. A number of corners were forced by Carshalton, and from one of these Jamie Streat got in a glancing header that was well saved by the keeper. The game continued to be played at a tremendous pace, with the attacks going from end to end, but no further goals were added and so Hanworth claimed the points.
