WSYL Cup 1st Round - 12th October 2003

Carshalton came back from the dead with an equaliser in injury time, and then secured a place in the next round by scoring twice in extra time. The hosts were first to press, but the Ashford keeper was not really seriously tested during the opening exchanges. As it was, Ashford began to take command of the midfield, and they eventually took the lead after 11 minutes. An opening was made for their dangerous No.2 to run down the left, before cutting inside Sam Mew and then beating the keeper with a firm shot. Carshalton now began to string a few moves together and from good passing were able to create several chances, but these were not taken. Ashford remained the better team throughout most of the first half, and the Carshalton defence had to work hard to prevent any serious penetration. Nevertheless, Ashford added a second goal on 27 minutes when Jack Malin, Lewis West and Robert Marsden were involved in a dreadful mix-up that gifted a goal to the persistent Ashford No.2. Five minutes later Jezz Williams reduced the deficit when netting with a thunderous shot from outside the penalty area.

The second half saw Carshalton make the early running after a number of changes that saw Louis Barron-Pell operating effectively down the left, and the electric Mo Fafona giving the Ashford defence a torrid time with his sublime first touch and changes of pace and direction. The hosts bore down on the Ashford goal creating several chances, including one that saw the Ashford keeper make a terrific save after some trickery from Mo Fafona. However, the skilful Ashford side remained dangerous coming forward, and a corner was forced on 47 minutes. From this the Ashford No. 2 completed his hat-trick with a superb glancing volley that looped over the defence and into the roof of the net. This signalled the Carshalton onslaught as they threw caution to the winds and operated with a three-man defence. Somehow the Ashford defence survived until ten minutes from time, but then Jamie Streat scored with a terrific shot from 20 yards. Carshalton then had a penalty appeal turned down for a blatant handball in the penalty area. The ball went back down the other end, but an Ashford forward fired over from a very good position. Carshalton then created and missed a whole array of chances in the frantic search for an equaliser. A corner was then forced deep into injury time, and after a tremendous goalmouth scramble, the ball found Jack Malin who smashed the ball home to force extra time.

The first half of extra time was contested evenly, but it was Ashford who went closest when Jack Malin was forced to make a desperate goal-line clearance in injury time. The second period saw Carshalton apply most of the pressure, but the breakthrough did not come until 4 minutes from time. After some clever preparatory work in midfield, the diminutive Mo Fafona destroyed two defenders before seeing his shot blocked by the keeper. However, the ball ran free to the predatory Julian Osei-Gyimah who made no mistake from close range. A minute later the excellent Jezz Williams put the result beyond any doubt when scoring from twenty yards out with a stupendous rising shot.
