Surrey Cup - 1st Round - 19th October 2003
Carshalton comprehensively beat the Guildford & Shere Premier Champions to secure a home tie against Elm Grove Colts in the next round of the Surrey Cup. It was Carshalton, prompted by Jezz Williams, Jamie Streat and Daniel Johnson, who created the bulk of the early chances, but the forward line either wasted them or the hosts rode their luck. A spectacular long-range free-kick from near halfway by Jack Malin was turned onto the angle of the goal by the keeper, and then minutes later Jamie Streat hit the underside of the bar following a corner. St Francis Sports had a limited number breakaway attacks, but they were unable to make any impact on the impressive Carshalton defence. After 15 minutes Julian Osei-Gyimah lobbed the keeper after chasing a through ball, but the goal was disallowed for offside. However, the breakthrough finally came on 22 minutes when Daniel Johnson received a pass inside the area, and fired home through a crowd of players. The remainder of the half failed to produce any further goals, although Ben Gyamfi should have scored twice for Carshalton in the final few minutes of the half.
After the break, Carshalton continued to dominate and were unlucky not to go further ahead on 35 minutes when Mo Fafona broke in the area and fired a shot against the underside of the bar. Jack Keable then went close with an angled shot from inside the area, but disaster struck a few minutes later when a defensive mix-up in the Carshalton penalty area left an opponent with a simple tap-in for the equaliser. St Francis Sports now began to press, and the visiting defence was put under some pressure, but there was no real end product. After 40 minutes of play, Jezz Williams restored Carshalton's lead after a typical run down the right flank. This incursion culminated in a terrific save from the keeper, before the rebound was dispatched superbly into the far corner of the net. Soon after the hosts nearly equalised when a free kick from outside the box skimmed the Carshalton cross bar. Jack Malin was then sent up front in search of a third goal, and within a minute a superb ball was played into his path, and after brushing aside the last defender, he accelerated clear to thump the ball past the advancing keeper. On 50 minutes Mo Fafona made a superb run at the defence down the left, and the ball was laid off inside for Jack Malin to come steaming in and crack the ball past the keeper. Carshalton were now in total control, as the hosts struggled to cope with the power and pace of Jack Malin, the lightening-quick Mo Fafona, and the right-wing mazy runs of Jezz Williams. The fifth goal eventually arrived when Jezz Williams played in Mo Fafona who sprinted clear for a successful one-on-one with the keeper. Carshalton added a sixth near the end when a defender headed Jamie Streat's free kick past his own keeper.
