League – 6th October 2002

The score of today's match does not reflect the game.  Staines came into the game full of confidence being the league leaders.  We kicked off and took the game to them, playing good football and using our pace to get them on the back foot.  Unfortunately although having had most of the game and the best goal scoring chances we couldn't get past their defence.  Their goalkeeper played well and kept us out.  Half time came with the scores level.

Staines kicked off the second half with the game following much the same pattern.  Again we dominated but couldn't break them down, with good chances falling to both our forwards Chris Stevens and Craig Barham, but the ball just wouldn't go in the net.  Staines scored against the run of play - we had a throw in and threw it down the middle.  It was headed back towards our goal looking as though our defender Luke Kitchiner would clear it.  In doing so, the the ball rebounded off their forward's foot and into the goal!  This stirred us to speed the game up to get the equaliser and there were some good tackles from their defence keeping us at bay.  At times we were camped in their half but couldn't break through.  With us throwing caution to the wind Staines broke away and  on the final whistle scored a second.  The ref blew for full time and the game was over.

This was a hard defeat to take having dominated a game and losing!  We can take heart from the manner in which we played without scoring as Staines have won all their matches.  We have now lost 2 and if we want to be challenging at the end of the season, we have to take the chances created.  I have signed 2 new players today and hope they will be challenging for places in the starting 11.  This will give me alternatives when things aren't happening to change things and keep the players on their toes.

Today's line up: Andy Bitmead, Jordan Knight, Dean Bruce, Tom Hughes, Luke Kitchiner, James Brown, Robert Appleyard, Jack Milsom, Leon Cole, Chris Stevens, Craig Barham, Michael Duho.
