League – 15th September 2002

This was the first game of the season for Carshalton and being against last year's League Champions, everyone expected a tough contest.  Carshalton opened very strongly and Motspur were clearly knocked back and forced to defend hard.  Carshalton looked very dangerous in attack with Tyson Phillips giving the Motspur back four no end of trouble, as they struggled to cope with his excellent running off the ball.  Aaron Williams in midfield was effectively running the show in that department.

The Motspur goalkeeper was outstanding, pulling off several key saves and keeping Motspur in the game.  However, the deadlock was broken when Aaron Williams pounced on a ball just outside the Motspur 18 yard box and launch a hard and low shot, which found its way into the bottom right hand corner of the goal. Despite further attempts by Carshalton to increase their lead Motspur managed to hang on until half time.

Carshalton maintained the pressure in the second half and had a number of excellent chances.  However as the half progressed Motspur began to come into the game and looked dangerous on the break.  Luke Adams, Steve Greenslade, Dave Booth and Jack Goodman in defence and Mark Cowhig in goal looked in control, keeping the home side out.  Carshalton ran out victors in what was an excellent start to the season.  Manager Graham Polley said after the game ‘I was absolutely delighted with today’s performance.  The boys have only had a few games together but they really played for each other’.
