Surrey Cup Preliminary Round – 22nd September 2002

Having beaten West Wickham in a preseason match, everyone knew that they would be up for this game.  West Wickham started strongly and in the first ten minutes put in some very strong tackles to let the Carshalton boys know that they were going to make a fight of this one and were out for revenge for the pre season match.

Wickham commanded the first 20 minutes and had clearly learnt a lot from the first game.  Nevertheless the Carshalton defence held firm with Darren Wells having an excellent game.  Carshalton lost Stevie Greenslade half way through the half following an awkward fall and Tom Lawler came on to take the right back position.  Gradually, Carshalton began to get the upper hand with Danny Coombes in the Carshalton midfield working hard with Aaron Williams to dominate proceedings.  Both the Carshalton strikers came close in the first half but failed to get the ball in the back of the net.

After the break and with the slope and a following wind, Carshalton gradually took control.  Robert Turner was increasingly winning the ball in the midfield and linking up well with the Carshalton strikers.  The deadlock was broken with about 20 minutes to go when Carshalton were awarded a free kick about ten yards outside the Wickham area.  Luke Adams as he has done so often before converted with a shot which was beautifully placed in the top left hand corner of the Wickham goal.  With five minutes to go, Aaron Williams took a nasty knock and Graham Polley team manager took the opportunity to give Oliver Adams a run out and at the same time brought on Richard Matthews for Mark Pucek.  Despite what was an extended injury time, Carshalton kept the lead and moved onto the next round.
