League – 6th October 2002
This was Carshalton's first home game of the season and what a game it was. Corinthian are a first class set up and everyone knew this match was going to be a big test for the Carshalton boys. Carshalton started well having the majority of the play although Corinthian looked dangerous on the break and messers Adams, Wells, Greenslade and Booth did well to stop the quick Corinthian strikers from getting through. Early on in the game Darren Wells took a nasty knock to the leg and had to be replaced by Tom Lawler. Tom fitted in well and Carshalton continued to hold Corinthian.
Up front Tyson Phillips and Chris Tupper gradually began to test the Corinthian defence and we all thought we had the first goal when Chris broke through only to shoot wide. Nevertheless about half way through the half Chris soon made up for the earlier miss when Luke Adams went on a driving run from defence, releasing Chris down the left hand side. Chris let go with a superb left footed shot and Carshalton were 1-0 up.
The rest of the half was a battle of the midfields with excellent work from Aaron Williams, Robert Turner, Jack Goodman and Oliver Adams. The second half started as the first and it was clear the game was a long way from being over. Robert Turner's twists and turns were increasingly giving the Corinthian defence problems and it was Robert's efforts that helped secured Carshalton's second goal when he put in an excellent cross which found Oliver Adams unmarked on the right. Oliver pushed the ball on and made what was an extremely difficult goal look simple.
Corinthian continued to battle hard. However, even when they did get past the Carshalton defence Mark Cowhig in goal had the position under control. Danny Coombes and Mark Pucek came on for Tyson Phillips and Oliver Adams and both had chances, which were only just foiled by the Corinthian goalkeeper.
Manager Graham Polley said afterwards "A great performance by a squad of boys who are getting stronger by the week. I was very pleased with Stevie Greenslade and Aaron Wells today and with Oliver Adams starting to play the football we all know he can, team selection is proving a very hard job. To be honest I could happily praise each boy in the squad - they were great".
