League – 13th October 2002
This was the biggest test so far for the Carshalton boys and everyone was looking forward to the game. Meadow are a first class set up with great sponsorship and facilities.
The game started and it soon became clear that Carshalton were on top form and wanted the game. Carshalton were consistently first to the ball and were making Meadow, who were last year's Surrey Cup winners, look decidedly ordinary. After sustained Carshalton pressure led by Tyson Philips and new signing Jack Mesure the dead lock was broken when Luke Adams opened the scoring with a hard and low free kick which skimmed off the surface to beat the Meadow goalkeeper. Carshalton's second goal came from a throw in from Jack Goodman to Chris Tupper who won a corner. Chris took the corner picking out Luke Adams and Carshalton were 2-0 up.
The remainder of the first half was a battle of the midfields with Chris Tupper, Danny Coombes, Aaron Williams and Oliver Adams holding Meadow in every department and the Carshalton back four looking solid and unworried.
The second half began with Meadow coming out with a true belief that they could come back and win. Shortly after the start following a some what questionable tackle on Peter Booth, Meadow got a goal back and everyone realised "Game on". It was only after Meadow's goal that Carshalton seemed to step up a gear and Luke Adams got his hat trick to make it 3-1. Carshalton began to look increasingly comfortable and had numerous chances including a shot that hit the post from Luke Adams and a near miss from Tyson Philips. Oliver Adams made it 4-1 with an excellent goal and whilst Meadow got one back, Danny Coombes' 30 yard shot finished the scoring and took the impressive Carshalton to a 5-2 win.
Graham Polley said after the game "The boys were outstanding. Jack Goodman who played left back was great and the nice thing was that when I brought on substitutes Tom Lawler, Richard Matthews and Mark Pucek the balance remained and our play gave Meadow no end of problems. What can I say about this bunch of lads - they are great. We have great coaching by Jamie McAneny and Peter Booth. Great attitude from the boys and great parents and supporters. This was a true squad performance and something to be proud of." Graham went on to say that, as we have Meadow next week in the Surrey Cup we must not be complacent. Meadow are calling extra training next week and rest assured will be up for next week's match. Well done boys you ALL did Carshalton proud. Let's show Meadow next week that this was not a one off and that Carshalton are the force to beat!!!
