Surrey Cup – 20th October 2002

Simply the Best.
With Carshalton having beaten Meadow 5-2 last week and Meadow being reigning Surrey
Cup holders, everyone knew that today's game was going to be the biggest test for the all new Carshalton Junior set up.  Carshalton's position was not made any easier as Jack Mesure was not eligible to play, Tyson Phillips and Darren Wells were injured and David Booth was away on holiday.  This meant that several boys had to play out of position.

The game opened and Carshalton were quite frankly all over Meadow and had their defence in a permanent state of panic.  This pressure soon paid off after an Aaron Williams shot took a deflection and after a goal mouth scramble Chris Tupper put the Carshalton side one nil ahead.  Meadow came back strong and gradually began to get into the game.  The Carshalton defence had to absorb sustained periods of pressure and Tom Lawler was doing an excellent job keeping the Meadow attack under control. Aaron Williams and Danny Coombes in mid field were the Carshalton engine and were also preventing Meadow getting a goal back.  Half time came and went and both sides were fighting hard.  About ten minutes into the second half Carshalton scored again with a superb Aaron Williams effort and everyone on the line started to feel "is this going to be a repeat of last week's game?".

It soon became clear that the Meadow boys had a different idea.  After what was a lack of concentrate Meadow got one back.  Game on.  Could Carshalton hold on.  The answer was yes and what is more the Carshalton boys took the game to Meadow and looked the stronger side at full time.

David Workman, General Secretary of the West Surrey Boys League was present at this match and said afterwards "A great game - it is only a shame they did not meet in the final".  One Meadow parent said "You have a great side.  Well done, you out-played us".

Mark Adams (assistant manager Carshalton Juniors) said "We have a great squad and the depth showed today.  Every boy has come on and the pleasing thing is the attitude.  This side can go all the way".

Several of the boys have asked me to thank the supporters for the excellent encouragement given.  Well done mums, dads and friends.  Keep it up.
