League Cup – 3rd November 2002
This game started with Carshalton Athletic (The Robins) coming out clearly determined to make a fight of it. The Robins were matching Carshalton Juniors and at times causing the Juniors' defence problems. Both goalkeepers were kept busy and it was proving real end-to-end stuff with lots of well-balanced battles going on in several key positions. The deadlock was broken after about 25 minutes when Ollie Adams drilled in a corner kick and Dan Coombes pounced on the ball to hit home. The rest of the half was relatively even with both the Robins and Juniors missing chances. At half time Juniors had an intense strategy discussion and as the second half began, the Juniors looked more settled. About 10 minutes into the half and after sustained pressure and good work by Mark Pucek, Chris Tupper followed up on a deflected shot to put Juniors 2 - 0 ahead. As the Robins began to tire, Juniors became increasingly more determined with good work on the right by Jack Goodman who slotted a ball through to Chris Tupper whose clinical finishing saw him take his second goal and Juniors move on to 3-0. Carshalton Juniors continued to press and won a corner. The corner kick was swung in and met by Ollie Adams who curled a Beckham like shot superbly into the top right hand corner of the Robins net leaving the keeper stranded. Whilst the Robins continued to battle they were finding it difficult to contain the Juniors and both Ollie Adams and Mark Pucek scored further goals taking the final score to 6-0.
After the match Graham Polley said "Athletic did very well in the first half and looked good on the counter attack. Our boys were not settled and if the Robins had got a first half goal, things might have been very different. In the second half there were two key factors which led to our victory. Firstly there was Mark Cowhig's outstanding point blank save and the second factor was our fitness. I am delighted with the effort all the boys put into today - well done. In particular it was nice to see Darren Wells return and Richard Matthews do well when he came on. I was also delighted for Mark Pucek who never stopped working and whose effort was rewarded with a goal."
After the football there was a very successful Fireworks display and we were delighted with the turnout. Lots of thanks to all who helped make the event a success and to all who came along to support.
