Surrey Cup  – 5th January 2003

The first game of the year in the Surrey Cup is always the game that the top sides hate.  Christmas pudding and too many parties often make the top sides vulnerable to a committed under dog.  Certainly Hersham thought the reversal of the fixture due to the Juniors pitch being unplayable gave them the upper hand.  The pitch itself gave them an advantage as it was narrow and did not suit the Juniors open play.

Nevertheless despite the Christmas break Juniors were not for seeing their 13 match unbeaten record broken.  After about 10 minutes Luke Adams opened the scoring and this settled Juniors and the goals just kept coming.  Tyson Phillips got his first hat trick and he now joins messrs Luke Adams, Jack Mesure and Chris Tupper in being players who have scored hattricks this season.  Further goals from Mesure (2), Tupper and Williams saw off what was a lackluster opposition as Juniors cruised to a comfortable win and the last 8 of the premier competition in the area.  Perhaps more encouraging was the performances of  Mark Cowhig in goal who was as solid as ever, Steve Greenslade,  Darren Wells, David Booth and Jack Goodman who looked very comfortable in defence and the midfield engine of  Aaron Williams and Dan Coombes.  At half time Richard Matthew's and Mark Pucek came on  for Dan Coombes and David Booth.  This only added to the Juniors' ability and commitment and helped take the side to a further convincing win.

An impressive first game of the year which sees the Juniors go on to the last 8 of the competition -  well done Juniors.
