League – 23rd February 2003
This was the first run out since the side suffered its first defeat of the season and it is true to say management were very apprehensive of how the boys would bounce back. Matters were not helped by the allocation of a referee who is generally acknowledged as being less than mobile and unable to keep up with play when officiating at Under 15 Premiership level.
The game started well and whilst it was clear that the boys were a bit rusty, they were making good chances and on a small uneven pitch looked the better side. Darren Wells in defence was having a good game and Tyson Phillips was making good runs. The deadlock was broken when just before half time. Jack Measure broke through, beat the keeper and slotted home.
Following half time, the restart was nothing short of a comedy. The forwards passed the ball back to midfield who looked at each other and lost it. We then won the ball back only to see the clearance of the subsequent back pass to be mis-kicked and there was a Hampton striker to shoot home to make it 1-1.
During the rest of the half we were on top for the majority of the period and following a long goal kick by Mark Cowhig, Chris Tupper pounced and Juniors went 2-1 up. Chris had another great shot which hit the bar and as the game ended everyone knew that this was a very important win and not our day for converting chances.
Perhaps not the most entertaining game but another win. Graham Polley said afterwards he was delighted with the win given how few games had been played over the last month and the fact that we did not train this week. He felt there were a lot of positives saying the defence looked strong, Dan Coombes had a good game after illness and the strikers made lots of chances.
