League – 9th March 2003
Carshalton arrived for this game in a great frame of mind and just looking at the players faces it was clear who ever they were about to play were in for a hard game.
Carshalton’s forward line were nothing short of ‘on fire’ and it soon became clear that Corinthian were going to spend a lot of the game on the back foot. The first goal was beautifully taken when Jack Mesure pounced on a Chris Tupper shot that hit the post. Chris not to be out done soon made it 2-0 when he cannoned in a short-range chance. Jack then hit another goal and at half time it was 3-0. Although the Carshalton defence had little to do what balls the Corinthian team did get down the other end were easily picked up and Stevie Greenslade, Luke Adams, Jack Goodman and Darren Wells looked very assured and untroubled. In mid field Tom Lawler and Dan Comber were working really hard as was Oliver Adams and Rob Turner on the flanks. Indeed the whole team looked a class act. Although Mark Cowhig in goal had little to do his handling was so assured it just gave everyone confidence. Furthermore Marks calling and encouraging words were of great help to his teammates.
As the second half kicked off a little complacency crept in although a call or two from manager Graham Polley soon got the boys focused and the goals once again began to flow. Jack Mesure scored a further two and brothers Luke and Oliver Adams added two more. Not to be out done Chris Tupper just got a touch to a Stevie Greenslade shot and Carshalton ended the game 8-0.
During the second half Graham Polley made three changes. Dave Booth for Darren Wells, Richard Matthews for Oliver Adams and Mark Pucek for Robert Turner. Such is the depth of strength in the Carshalton squad that each of these boys just fitted in so well you did not realise Graham had made any changes and the chances and goals just kept coming.
What a game – the fire was back – the enjoyment was there – the will to win was as strong as we have ever seen and above all each and every boy wanted it and was willing to fight for every ball. Whilst Corinthian lost their shape towards the end they kept battling and worked very hard. However, when Carshalton play like this there are few sides, which can match them.
