League  – 27th April 2003

Both sides really wanted to avoid each other as they are due to play in the West Surrey League Cup Final next Sunday.  On top of this after the Easter break both Carshalton and Motspur had players unavailable.  Motspur started with only ten players but with the significant advantage of the slope and a strong following wind.  It was clear that Carshalton were rusty, having not played for two weeks and were taking time to settle.

Motspur looked dangerous in attack and were giving the Carshalton boys problems.  About half way through the first half following Carshalton's failure to clear from defence, Motspur went through down the left and the score was 1-0.

Carshalton seemed to step up a gear at this point and began to play football as opposed the "boot and hope" approach which seemed to be a feature of their play up to the goal.  At half time Graham Polley was up-beat and basically told the boys they were doing nothing wrong and to keep on pressing the Motspur goal.

This worked and the second half with the slope with them and a strong following wind Carshalton quickly equalised.  Thereafter Motspur struggled to get the ball out of their half and when one of their players retired injured and they went down to 9 players, Carshalton grew in confidence and a further two goals followed.

A good all round performance and three more points.  If Carshalton win against Corinthian (fixture to be arranged) they are guaranteed to share the title.  Is that enough - NO.  Winning their last two games gives them the outright championship and that is what every one of the boys wants.  Let's hope all their hard work pays off.

Good Luck for next Sunday at the Cup Final. THE ONE THING WE KNOW IS MOTSPUR WILL BE MUCH STRONGER.
